Bitumen is a viscous, black, semi-solid hydrocarbon material derived from the distillation of crude oil
and found naturally in asphalt deposits. Valued for its outstanding adhesive, waterproofing, and
durability properties, bitumen is the essential binding agent in asphalt concrete for road construction
and the primary waterproofing material for roofing membranes, bridge decks, and airport runways.
Global bitumen demand is driven by infrastructure expansion, road rehabilitation programs, and the
growing construction sector across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
Bitumen grades are classified by penetration hardness, viscosity, or polymer modification level.
Common penetration grades — 40/50, 60/70, 80/100, and 85/100 — define the material's hardness at
25 °C, with lower numbers indicating harder, more durable grades suited to heavy-traffic surfaces.
Polymer-Modified Bitumen (PMB) incorporates SBS or APAO polymers to enhance elasticity and
fatigue resistance, while Viscosity Grade (VG) bitumen is specified to Indian standards for sub-tropical
climates. Petrolodex supplies all major grades conforming to ASTM D946, EN 12591, IS 73, and
AASHTO M20 standards.
