What Is Granular Sulphur?

Granular sulphur is elemental sulphur recovered from crude oil refining and natural gas processing, then formed into dense, free flowing spheres typically 2 mm to 6 mm across. The granulation process builds each granule by coating a seed particle with successive layers of molten sulphur, cooling each layer before the next is applied. The result is a hard, low dust granule that survives long ocean voyages, repeated transfer, and open stockpiling without breaking down into fines. It is also referred to as sulfur in North American markets.

Granular sulphur is the most widely traded solid sulphur form in the world because it moves cleanly. Set against lump or slate, it releases far less dust in transit and handling, loses less product to fines, and loads and discharges faster at port. That combination makes it the default specification for phosphate fertilizer producers, sulphuric acid plants, mining operations running leach circuits, and chemical manufacturers who need consistent feedstock quality arriving on schedule.

Purity is the primary commercial variable. Standard export grade runs 99.5% minimum sulphur content and serves the bulk of fertilizer and acid demand. Grades at 99.8% and 99.9% carry tighter ash, carbon, and acidity limits, and are specified by refineries, chemical processors, and any operation where trace contaminants affect downstream yield or catalyst life.

The Solutions

Petrolodex Delivers Granular Sulphur Supply, Differently

Sulphur is a byproduct, not a product made to order. Output rises and falls with refinery runs and gas processing rates, which means availability can tighten quickly and buyers are left competing for allocation they cannot forecast. Petrolodex resolves this through established relationships with recovery plants and refineries, pre positioned stock at key ports, and a bulk handling network built specifically for granular product, giving buyers dependable access and predictable delivery windows.

Certified Purity Across Every Cargo Image

01

Certified Purity Across Every Cargo

Petrolodex sources granular sulphur at 99.5%, 99.8%, and 99.9% purity from accredited refineries and gas processing plants across the Middle East, Central Asia, and North Africa. Every cargo carries plant certificates of analysis and independent third party inspection, so the purity, moisture, ash, and acidity figures you contracted for are the figures that arrive at your plant.

Bulk Handling Built for Granular Product Image

02

Bulk Handling Built for Granular Product

Granular sulphur rewards careful handling and punishes careless handling with fines, dust, and product written off on arrival. Petrolodex coordinates end to end movement using covered storage, enclosed conveyors, dust suppressed loading, and bulk carriers configured for sulphur cargo, with jumbo bag and containerised options where volumes or discharge facilities call for them.

Contract Structures That Match Your Production Cycle Image

03

Contract Structures That Match Your Production Cycle

Fertilizer complexes, acid plants, and leach circuits cannot pause when a cargo runs late. Petrolodex structures supply around your consumption rate, whether that means fixed monthly tonnage against an annual commitment, a quarterly rolling agreement with price review windows, or a single spot cargo to cover an unplanned gap.

Why Sulphur Buyers Choose Petrolodex

Sulphur procurement is usually fragmented. Buyers hold separate relationships with recovery plants, freight brokers, inspection agents, port operators, and documentation handlers just to move a single cargo, and every handoff is a place where quality, schedule, or paperwork can slip.

Petrolodex consolidates the entire supply chain into one accountable relationship. Verified origin, compliant logistics, and transparent pricing through a single point of contact, so your procurement team spends less time chasing cargo and more time keeping production running.

Verified Origin and Purity Integrity Icon Image

Verified Origin and Purity Integrity

Every cargo is backed by plant certificates of analysis, independent inspection reports from SGS, Intertek, or Bureau Veritas, and full MSDS documentation, so you know exactly what purity and specification you are receiving before the vessel sails.

Dust Controlled Bulk Network Icon Image

Dust Controlled Bulk Network

Pre qualified sulphur berths, covered warehousing, and bulk carriers configured for granular cargo across key trade corridors. We protect granule integrity from load port to discharge, which means fewer fines, less dust, and less product lost between contract and consumption.

Contract Flexibility and Price Transparency Icon Image

Contract Flexibility and Price Transparency

Spot, term, and volume linked supply agreements available. Pricing benchmarked to published sulphur assessments with optional fixed price windows for budget certainty. No hidden freight, storage, or handling premiums.

Typical Applications

Typical Granular Sulphur Applications

Granular sulphur sits at the front of some of the largest industrial value chains in the world. It becomes the acid that unlocks phosphate rock, the leaching agent that recovers copper and nickel, and the input behind rubber, detergents, and crop nutrition. Petrolodex serves buyers at every stage of that chain, direct to producer, through distributor networks, and into manufacturing facilities.

Residential & Commercial Heating Image

Phosphate Fertilizer Production

The largest single outlet for granular sulphur. Burned to sulphuric acid and reacted with phosphate rock to produce DAP, MAP, and TSP fertilizers that feed global agriculture.

Industrial Process fuel Image

Sulphuric Acid Manufacturing

Merchant and captive acid plants convert granular sulphur into the most widely produced industrial chemical in the world, feeding chemical processing, metals refining, and water treatment.

Commercial Cooking & Catering Image

Mining, Leaching & Metals Recovery

Copper solvent extraction, nickel high pressure acid leach, and uranium processing all run on sulphuric acid produced from granular sulphur feedstock.
